Why ‘Summerisle’?
Summerisle is the name of the fictional island in The Wicker Man. The 1973 version is probably my favourite horror film and so it seemed an appropriate name. It also inspired the idea to turn the films into a series of stories and events which took place in one location, something akin to Stephen King’s version of Maine.
What formats are your films in?
All of my films are UK releases, with the exception of The Blair Witch Project and Deep Blue Sea which I bought years back when I lived abroad in Belgium. All of the films are in DVD or Blu-Ray formats.
Why physical copies only?
Partly because I like having and preserving physical media, and partly because otherwise I would have an absolutely enormous range of films to consider when taking Netflix and Amazon etc… into account. Sticking to the physical media I have gives some structure and allows me to focus.
What counts as Horror?
Ah now that is a difficult one and in the end it really comes down to personal opinion. Many films straddle the line between horror and another genre. Two which particularly come to mind are Thrillers and Sci-fi. Take for example the Alien franchise. Alien feels like a definite horror, whereas Aliens would be more debatable, though I would be loathe to start splitting a franchise into different genres!
So yes, I’ve cast my net of ‘What is Horror?’ pretty wide and tend to include anything with a link to the genre, so something like The Addams Family, which is a family film and a comedy, is included because of its general dark gothic vibe and homage to classic horror and the Old Dark House. This even extends to something like Universal’s Invisible Man films, a few of which aren’t even remotely horror but they’re part of the horror legacy started by the first. I also include the Giant Monster and Grindhouse films, like Godzilla or Hobo with a Shotgun for example, because why not!
